What the Rovinieta is and why it's easy to forget
The Rovinieta is the fee for using Romania's national roads, mandatory for almost all vehicles. Unlike ITP or RCA, it expires silently — you don't get any warning beforehand, and if you bought it for a short period (7 or 30 days) it's easy to lose track of the exact day it expires.
For passenger cars, the fine for driving without a valid Rovinieta is 500-1,000 lei — reduced by half (250 lei) if you pay within 15 days of being notified of the fine. The good news since 2026: there's now a grace period — if you drove without a Rovinieta and buy one valid for that day by the end of the following day at the latest, you avoid the fine. But that means you have to realize in time that it expired — exactly what an automatic alert solves.
